Poppy in Newark, OH

Just Adopted!

Poppy see, Poppy do! This easy-going, freckled gal just wants to be by your side. She doesn’t really care what you are doing as long as she can join in. It takes very little effort to make her happy. She is content to follow her foster parents throughout the house and around the yard; even requiring company outside for potty time!

Poppy is mostly house-trained. She seems to understand the concept and will potty without fail every time she’s outdoors, but she has had a few accidents in the house. Her new family will need to pay close attention as her cues for needing to go outside are subtle.

Poppy came into rescue from a shelter, where she was taken in as a stray. Though her exact age is unknown, she is estimated to be about 8 years old.

Do not let her age fool you one bit! This girl manages stairs and she loves to go for walks. Car rides and some shopping at the pet store are lots of fun for her. Her tail wags almost non-stop and she has lots of pep in her step!

Poppy gets along well with her three foster sisters, but prefers small doses of the young, exuberant, busybody Australian Shepherd. Poppy does just fine with the dogs her size, as long as they do not spend too much time in her personal space. Poppy needs to be in the presence of others and to know what is going on around her, but she sort of hangs in the background. It seems she does not hear much of anything, so Poppy uses her foster sisters as guides. She will do well with another dog (or dogs) who can show her the ropes, but future siblings need to be on the calmer side and willing to allow Poppy her personal space. Poppy has shown little interest in toys and she doesn’t engage in much play, but she loves treats and a good meal. Eating is her favorite thing in the whole wide world!

Poppy is crated at bedtime and for a few hours during the day. She sleeps soundly in her crate all night without issue, but she will not go in on her own. It is easy to “woo” her by tossing a treat or two in the crate and she then settles in for the night. Being crated when people are home is stress-inducing; it is one of the few times she will bark and whine. Poppy wants out of her crate first thing in the morning, so don’t even think about starting the coffee pot before you tend to her! She finds that particular circumstance, along with baths and grooming, to be a great injustice.

Poppy’s furever family will find great joy in this gentle girl. She is a wonderful companion and quite happy to just “go with the flow.” If she could have her family home with her for most of the day, she would certainly prefer it, but she will tolerate your absence when she has to.
