Louie in Prairie Village, KS

Just Adopted!

Here is the pup with his new family...

Meet Louie – a very happy 3-year-old boy looking for his forever home! He’s a sweet Velcro pup with lots of love to give.

Louie’s original owners moved away and left him with a family friend. The friend kept him for almost a year, and during that time he was mostly kept outdoors. When he was allowed inside, he was placed in his crate. Louie suffers from skin allergies, and spending so much time outside aggravated the situation. He recently finished his allergy meds, and his skin and coat are looking better.

Louie was not housebroken when we got him, but foster parents have made some headway on this issue. If left loose in the house, he might lift his leg on one of foster mom’s indoor plants. When it’s raining outside, Louie does not like to go outside to do his business, so patience is needed on rainy days (and an umbrella). A securely fenced yard would be best for Louie, and we are looking for a family who will continue his house-training.

When visitors come over, Louie is learning to ‘wait’ and not jump up to greet them. He likes to go for walks, though he pulls on the leash. In fact, when foster mom starts to put on his harness, he gets very excited and happy – he can hardly wait to get out the door! He needs more work learning to walk on a leash without pulling, but he is young and trainable.

Louie is very friendly and enjoys people (kids & adults), dogs and cats. Foster parents have another Cavalier and a cat. Initially, Louie and the cat were unsure of each other – but now they play hide ‘n seek together. When Louie first meets a new person, or a new dog, he might be unsure at first – but after a few minutes, he’s fine.

Like most Cavaliers, he will attach to his humans quickly. Kind of a Velcro dog. He sometimes has a little separation anxiety, and he will bark if left alone in his crate when foster parents leave the house. He prefers that his humans go with him in the backyard (rather than putting him outside by himself) – we think this anxiety is from his previous situation; but with time, we think Louie will settle down with his new family. It would be best to place him with a family where someone is home a good part of the day.

Louie has a skin allergy issue, which can be easily managed. Foster mom uses medicated shampoo, which helps – and Louie is very patient while getting his bath. The allergy meds from vet combined with medicated shampoo baths have relieved Louie’s discomfort. Although his foster parents have made progress, he will need continued care and training with his new family… (walking on a leash, housebreaking, separation issues) – however, with training and patience, we think he’ll be a great dog for the right family. Other than his allergy issue, Louie is healthy, heart is normal, up-to-date on vac’s, etc. He has a friendly disposition and seems to get along with most people and other animals. We will give special consideration to applicants who have a fenced yard, someone home part of the day, and are willing and able to provide consistent, continued training for him.
