Patrick in Albuquerque, NM

Update 11-16-17: We have received several good applications for Patrick, so are only taking backup applications for now. Thank you!

Handsome Patrick came to Cavalier Rescue USA with very little background information and no belongings. He is approximately 2-3 years old, and fairly well socialized. He is neutered, up-to-date on shots, and microchipped. He is currently only 13 lbs, but 14 is probably his optimal size.

This pup is very timid at first, but quickly grew to trust his foster mom. He is also good with other small/medium dogs, but takes a little time to relax. He doesn’t understand that he shouldn’t jump up on a table, or that he has to wait to eat, but he is learning. He also is not afraid of a collar and leash, but does not seem experienced in leash walks. He knows his name, mostly comes when called, and also knows the command ‘sit’. He is crate trained (will ‘kennel up’ on command) and house broken. He currently sleeps in an open crate (but would love to be on his human’s bed), and is given some freedom at the house and has not destroyed anything or soiled.

He is currently living in a pack of 6 (no one larger than 27 lbs). When he first arrived, he was timid and insecure, but he is getting more confident and now plays with the other dogs. He even allows the old grouchy one to sniff him, without growling. He seems to know that he is royalty and likes a ‘throne’; the top of the kennel, a bar stool, top of the cooler, etc.

He has not been tested with small children or cats, and is more timid with men than women. He is highly affectionate, just wants to be where you are, loves a belly rub or ear scratch, and will give kisses. He follows his foster mom everywhere she goes in the house. He does exhibit a bit of resource guarding (people, food, bones), but not toward his foster mom, just the other dogs, but will need parents to reinforce that this is not necessary.

Patrick loves running and playing with other dogs, so he would be happiest in a home with a fenced yard and other playful, active, small dogs (or dog), and humans that spoil him with attention. He’s probably not best for a family with small children because of the resource guarding.
