Ruby in Cleveland, OH

Meet Ruby. Ruby just turned 10 years old in October and her previous family wanted her to get the attention and care that she needed in her senior years.

Ruby was taken to the vet pretty quickly because she had thinning hair and a pot belly. Her previous family stated that she would also tire quickly on walks. Many tests were ran and she was diagnosed with a urinary tract infection and Cushing’s disease. She was started on antibiotics for the urinary tract infection and 10 mg Vetoryl twice per day. She will require monitoring for her Cushing’s disease every three months. She was also started on 2.5 mg of Vetmedin twice per day for her heart murmur.

Ruby’s adopter would have to be very diligent with her diet. She was started on a low carbohydrate diet, currently Honest Kitchen (Zeal). She seeks out food often and will even think her foster brother and sisters’ food is hers. She is not aggressive about it, but care needs to be taken when feeding her and other furry members of the household.

Ruby is affectionate, she gives kisses freely. She is very calm and tends to keep to herself. She definitely knows when it’s meal time and has no problem alerting you with her soft bark. She doesn’t run around the yard or play with toys. She has been exploring her new surroundings, but often hangs out and sleeps in the kitchen. Stairs may pose a challenge with her pot belly and her balance. She manages one step in her foster home, but more steps may be more difficult for her. She easily acclimated to her foster home and her foster brother and sisters so other dogs are okay. It is not known if she would do well with cats.

Ruby is house trained and can manage to hold it about 5 hours during the day. She sleeps well through the night. She can manage short walks, but a fenced in back yard is ideal.

Ruby is a senior Cavalier looking for someone with a less chaotic lifestyle to spend her retirement years with and who will give her plenty of love, attention and attend to her medical needs. Dogs with Cushing’s disease do need to be managed closely to prevent further complications.
