Max in Olympia, WA

Max is a sweet 7-year-old boy who loves everyone, male or female, young or old. He greets visitors with happy barks and a wagging tail. His nickname is Thumper because of that strong tail. He is always happy and will melt your heart with his big smile!

Max came into rescue in poor health. He was overweight, had untreated diabetes, and had a hard time walking. While being worked up for diabetes, x-rays were done on the back legs and it was discovered he had a sewing needle inside him! That became a priority, and was surgically removed as soon as his diabetes was under control. A second surgery was done in October to repair the luxated patella and ligament tears in his right knee. While Max has a ligament tear in his other knee, his orthopedic surgeon does not feel surgery is warranted. Max gets along fine and his mobility continues to improve as he recovers from right knee surgery. He does have some difficulty with stairs, so a single story home is recommended.

Max is a new man now! He is so much happier, interactive, playful and goofy.

He enjoys his daily walks to strengthen his muscles, behaves fairly well on the leash, though he does pull when he catches a scent. He also barks at other dogs, excitedly not aggressively, and is the kind that will lift a smaller dog right up into the air with his enthusiastic sniffing! Apparently Max is accustomed to cats. His foster kitty loves him and he lets her rub on him adorably. As far as his foster Cavalier siblings, he has mostly ignored them, but has recently shown playful behavior. He enjoys going for car rides too and is even good for baths.

He is very food-focused! Max will carefully monitor kitchen activity, and when meat is cooling on the counter, he will stare at it - as if willing it to jump off, and the first few weeks he would bark at it! He has learned to not expect table scraps, but he still craves them. He’s at his ideal weight now at 29 pounds. He is a big guy, but all the more to love!

While he is interactive when he wants to be, Max is also a big couch potato. He sleeps long stretches of the day and lets his people do whatever they want. For a Cavalier, he is pretty independent. If allowed on the couch, he will curl up comfortably next to you; but if you get up, watch out! Even if you think he’s asleep, when you get back to the couch he will be right in your spot! Just keeping it warm for you, of course. He is also on alert and will notify you if people come to the door (or holiday packages arrive). He currently sleeps on a blanket in the master bedroom, but if his new owners had extra room on their bed for a big guy, I’m sure he’d be happy to help keep feet warm. He only snores for short periods of time, is otherwise a quiet sleeper.

Max needs insulin injections twice a day for his diabetes, which is under good control. It’s very easy to do! His foster dad, who was afraid of needles, took to it in no time. Max's foster parents are pros at everything related to his diabetes and are happy to share all of their knowledge and experience with his new family. He qualifies for our Sharecare program to help offset the cost of his medications for one year post-adoption.
